Please join us for this informative technical workshop that is being offered in coordination with Vermont Department of Buildings and General Services (BGS) leadership, The Association of General Contractors of Vermont, and The American Institute of Architects (Vermont Chapter).
The workshop will be held Wednesday, May 8th from 11:00 am-5 pm as a Hybrid Event, both at 40 IDX Drive in South Burlington and via Zoom. There will be networking and a catered lunch, 4 - 50 minute education sessions, and a 4 PDH certificate will be provided to attendees that complete the training.

2024 Facilities Technical Workshop

This year’s Workshop will be comprised of four diverse presentations including:
1. Lessons Learned from Historical Structures: the Bennington Battle Monument and Beyond
Presenters: Vermont BGS, Stevens and Associates
This session will discuss the lessons learned while studying theBennington Battle Monument, its continued deterioration, and future restoration. The team will highlight the previous prescribed repairs and their effects on the current state of the structure, as well as the approach of the investigation, the methods used to perform the analysis and the determination of best course forward in this historic and high-profile structure. Further discussion will explore recent similar findings at the State House.
2. 2024 Flooding: Impacts to State Facilities and Navigating the Flood Hazard and Corridor Rule (FHARC)
Presenters: Vermont BGS, Freeman French Freeman, HP Cummings
Seventeen BGS buildings were damaged in the flooding of July 2023. BGS and their flood response team will provide an overview of flood impacts to the Capitol Complex in Montpelier, response in the immediate aftermath, and the planning and design phase of the project. The conversation will consist of the FEMA process including funding streams, as well as the impacts of the FHARC rule that was put into place after Hurricane Irene. This is the first large-scale flooding disaster to affect the State to this level with the FHARC in place and we will discuss the A/E teams’ approach to integration in future designs.
3. Transitioning To Carbon Free Energy Vermont
Presenter: Michael Kirick, Electrical Engineer, Kirick Engineering Associates
Solar PV electric generation along with the proliferation of EV chargers and heat pumps throughout Vermont has and will continue to change the electric grid load profile; utilities face different challenges to accommodate this change depending on the customers they serve. This session will review the impact onthe grid from electrifying the State’s heating and transportationsectors, and how the A/E community plays a role.
4a. Municipal Energy Resilience Program (MERP): Rollout, Status, and Findings
Presenter: Brian Sewell, Vermont BGS Energy Program Manager
Act 172 appropriated $45 million for assessments and the implementation of energy resilience measures in Vermont municipal facilities. This discussion will provide an update onthe program’s status and the types of projects we expect to see coming from this project that may impact the A/E community.
4b. What Design and Construction Professionals Need to Know About VTBuys
Presenter: Jennifer Fitch, Vermont BGS Commissioner
This session will provide an overview of the VTBuys program,the State’s new e-procurement system. We’ll discuss what VTBuys means for you, and how it will continue to improve our relationship with contractors and vendors.
As an ACEC National recognized Regional Continuing Education Provider (RCEP), ACEC of Vermont will be providing workshop attendees with 4.0 approved Vermont professional development hours (PDHs) for the workshop. Additionally, in collaboration with AIA Vermont, courses will be approved for AIA continuing education credits.
